As promised this week has some old School Moby kicking it
large with Next is the E followed by the classic Go that shattered
electronic music floor and into the subconscious minds of the mainstream
that paved the way for decent music to be played at clubs at least
for a few years when it mattered most.
Warp records released some of the greatest acid techno on their
label and one of their stars was LFO. Syndrome is crunchy with
lots of tweaky bites to fill your belly. Check out the label and be
ready for some hard heady techno.
Guerilla Records had a style all their own with Supereal, React to
Rhythm and Spooky who graces us with Little Bullet to finish out
this weeks session.
I have been waiting until I had a big enough audience before
sharing this gem. The original is called Good Feeling by Doi-
oing. Pretty lights delivers up a slow remix here and a faster
psy-hop version that I will post on the next Spundaze (5).
Fantastic original and smart update.
Perpetual Dawn is one of the all time great masterpieces from
the Orb. All good dub flows from this and how can one not smile
listening to this beauty. Anyone who does not own Adventures
Beyond the Ultraworld are missing out on the most pioneering
music in the electronic scene. This group changed the course
of my destiny as I am sure it did for many others.
With a Cousin like Lou who could ask for a better family. Great
dubtronic explorations along infinite dimensions.
Dub pistols finishes the set with rapture. A dub pleasure sure
to please Blondie.
This herrr is a guest post and review from none other than Summer “The Ass Shakin” Stewart!! She was kind enough to do a lil review on the Megahurtz jam that blasted peoples faces off last weekend.
Music is not my day job, but passionate about it, I am. There is nothing quite like hangin’ with your best buds, taking in a great performance. Here in Vancouver, W2 Storyeum on Cordova has opened to the public and the talent that they have brought into this place has been impressive. Saturday night, the W2 hosted a packed Red Bull MegaHurtz party. The two room line-up was incredible, but due to a hair straightener emergency, we missed a few acts. Really, I went to see MixHell and Vancouver’s own Felix Cartel, but in the meantime, was introduced to a few new favorites.
When we finally made it there, Black Milk had just taken the stage in the main room. Their set was a smooth blend of fast paced R&B sound with rock, creating a vibe that would rival any bangin’ concert. His set reminded me a little of Jay-Z in his rocker years. This guy can get the people moving – Major drinks got spilled.
Egyptrixx took the second stage (the air conditioned room) at about 11pm and let me just say…..The visuals in this room were Popinov. Literally. Old school red and blue 3D glasses were handed out at the door, so you could take in the full effect of the 3D visual/ light show. And look cool for the rest of the night. Egyptrixx, a Toronto based artist, his pop-synth dub-step sound was super groovy adding to the 3D visual effect. I couldn’t help but dance, and that is key in my opinion. Im looking forward to seeing his return to Vancouver and keeping my eyes open for a date.
MixHell is from party capital Sao Paulo, Brazil, and this you can tell. The former founding member and drummer from Sepultura, Igor Cavalera played a live drum set while wife Laima Leyton mixed a live set of hard beats, some new some old, and brought the big live festival sound to the indoor stage. The energy of these two are amazing – their set consistent and hard hitting, incorporating a sick extended version of “We Love Animals”, to some old SNAP I haven’t heard since high school. I danced through their whole set as if I were the only one there.
2AM, Felix Cartel takes main stage. I’m extremely proud to say that this city is home to such great talent, and Felix is no exception. Gaining hugely in popularity around the world, his intense fast paced beats stay true to the name electro house and you can hear the openness to different sounds based on his history with different types of music. Definitely an up-and-coming artist worth seeing. Epic night.
For me as a solo instrumentalist seeing DâM-Funk sing and rock the crowd with his turntables and synths on Thursday was quite the experience. I got a spot right up front with a few friends. We gave DâM love and respect through dance and the occasional handshake. Unfortunately, the club, Post Modern is an inadequate sounding room for such a genius to shine. Luckily my imagination can make up for the lack of subwoofer action. At the end of his set when he announced vinyl giveaways I knew my jumping powers would come in handy. I felt like Michael Jordan leaping to intercept the album DâM threw in the air to the crowd. I couldn’t quite grip it but managed to slap his new Adolescent Funk vinyl toward my friends. Tiffany and some other dude scrambled to the floor to snatch it. She gave him Zoo Lander’s blue steel look and he let go in submission. It was epic.
I’m really loving this Raindrops joint off Adolescent Funk (1988-1992). DaM’s Seinfeld-eqse bass, cheesy key changing and tasty synth solos all work so well in conjunction with his smoothly delivered raw funk vocals reminiscent of DJ Spinna’s finale track last night, I Can’t Help It by Michael Jackson.
This is my first Schitzpopinov post. Check my latest mix “A Cold Fall Night” for an idea of sounds you can expect to hear from me:
Soundcloud:
Until the future,
Michael Fraser – DJ/Violinist (http://bit.ly/cGylz7)
//Bonus: Stumbled across an old edit/mashup on my iPod blending Leela James’ “Music” and Anthony Rother’s remix of Kraftwerk’s “Trans Europe”. You will recognize the synth line because it was also used for Afrika Bambaataa’s Planet Rock. He will be in Vancouver on Nov 26th for a DJ set at Shine.
Girl Talk is back, Schitzheads. The Pittsburgh mash-up legend has been relatively quiet since the release of his biggest success to date, Feed The Animals (2008). All that’s over with now, He finally laced us up with a new LP today, ALL Day . It’s up for free download at Illegal Art. Check the link and get your fix, Schitzhead!
Live music is harder to capture me because not only does the music
have to pull me, but the lyrics need to speak to something inside of me that I wanted
to express.
Voltaire said “Anything that is too stupid to be spoken is sung.” so thank
goodness for music or so many good things would have gone unsaid that needed saying.
That being said sometimes a song becomes even more powerful after a bass boost and some
scrubbing as my second pick proves.
Up first is the Pixies with Where is My Mind? A group ahead of their
time with classics that will prevail in everyones collections.
Karsh Kale puts his own spin on Spirit in the Material World. This
track gets heavy play in my collection and I think it will in your as well.
The Dirty Heads are getting lots of attention, but in case you have
missed them here they are.
A cocktail of Sublime and Dispatch served with a slice of Dub. Stand Tall, take a
step outside of yourself “say what you want, say what you mean, question yourself.
Are you really what you seem and dream?”
The Last track this week is for Tyler and although this blog is more
focussed on live it was too fitting for this mix to pass up and besides it is my theme song and fav mashup
combining Booka Shade and Tom Petty-Brilliant!!!
WARNING: This weeks selections are hard thumping twisted beats
that are not designed for the faint at heart. Consult with your
physician before playing. I assume no responsibility for a total
and complete corresponding breakdown.
If you have not heard this remix by Stanton Warriors you need to get
out more and shake your funk. Stanton’s always put on a tight show
with a great mix in the crowd that ups the tempo and delivers a fresh
dose of sick breaks.
Open the Jowls is a hard hitting, mind bending, double dipped
signpost on the road less travelled. Hairpin corners at every beat.
Beware the Tipper who is the originator of this sound.
I am delivering up some Tayo here for Tyler and Friolo as his set
at the Syndicate was a 5am slow heavy bass set played at 9pm.
Here is a taste of what I thought he was going to dazzle us with.
Bonus days are here again.
Beat Assassins are Keeping it Jiggy so we can descend on the dance
floor and get down.
Add a comment if you are enjoying the beats and if you are not change
your frequency.
Ed Solo is cooking up some deep fried funky dub breaks for breakfast at his
own boogie buffet revival.
There is a spot reserved just for you if you hurry on over.
Krafty Kuts almost always throw in a track from this innovator when
playing a show because he is that good.
Deekline breaks up an Armand Van Helden house track and is here
because Rainbow Sue says “if this track does not get people up and dancing nothing will”
so prove her right and shake what your mother gave you.
It is time to get your Soul Shaking with the Dub Pistols and dj
Touche. A take no prisoners approach to making music. Look for more tracks to come from
this creative force.
Rounding it all up is Dom Almond with Korn Krisp, a hard thumping bass grinding
tornado of beats that will either define or decimate you.
Thank you for letting me have my money back after 5 months!RT @teambuy_van: @schitzpopinov Hi, you should have received a refund a while ago 42 years ago
