EL DJ LOCO + GRIZZANDOLE (Mountain Maddness Mondays)

ABOUT MAT THE ALIEN:
Let’s clear something up. Technically Mat is not an alien. He was born near Manchester and moved to Canada in the mid 90’s to follow his snowboarding addiction But that’s where things get weird. On the flight over, the airplane was overtaken by what appeared to be a massive electrical storm over the Atlantic and was out of contact for thirty minutes and when it reappeared it was in essentially the same spot as before-.” Alien contact? I don’t know, have you ever heard Mat spin records? He had been dj’ing since 1998 and developed his style while working in his family’s record store in Bury, England (opened by his dad at age 4, but it wasn’t until after he arrived in Canada that his turntable abilities suddenly jumped to new heights. Heights later described by Knowledge Magazine as, “Awe inspiring. Some next level shit.” “Who knows what happened on the plane?” he says. “I think If I can reproduce that alien sound , I should be able control minds and communicate through sound to people from all over the world.” Mat has toured across the globe , pioneering 4-turntable club nights in Whistler and Vancouver, and with crates as deep as a black hole combined with mixing and scratching skills he is considered among the best by anyone who sees him , Mat was chosen to represent Canada and rock the party at Canada House during the 2006 Winter Olympics.

Now He’s back from outer space

San Francisco’s Mike Relm is known for live shows that feature audio blends matched with video images, all manipulated in real time. The critically acclaimed video ”turntablist,” in his trademark suit and glasses, has toured with the Blue Man Group and performed during the Closing Ceremonies of the 2007 Pan Am Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Addictive TV has blazed a new trail in the art of audio/video remixing. The British duo’s live show has blown away audiences in over 50 countries, supporting acts such as the Chemical Brothers, Goldfrapp and Moby and earning the group two nods as the world’s best video performance artists according to DJ Magazine. The collective recently started officially remixing feature films, creating viral videos out of movies such as Iron Man and the Academy Award-winning Slumdog Millionaire.

DJ K-Tel (aka Technomorph)

K-Tel has been developing mad skills in Vancouver’s film industry: Sound Designing animation projects for CN, MTV and FOX working with Danny Antonucci and Gary Larson, and picture Editing with local legends Richard Martin, Greg Middleton and Bob Aschman. All while still Djing on the side for the last 24 years. Then one day local filmmaker / VJ legend Tony Pantages approached K-Tel about joining the Morpheus Project visual team…and Vancouver hasn’t been the same since.

As the technology has grown, more pixels and sound samples are able to be processed and Technomorph has been able to venture further down that technological rabbit hole, morphing and weaving all of his skills as Sound Designer / Editor / VJ and DJ together.

Presented With: Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad

——————–

MARTYN
(3024, Tectonic, Warp, Tempa, Revolver + more)

Martyn has provided body moving funk to the dance floors since the mid nineties. A love for Detroit techno, Chicago house and hiphop fueled his need to be seriously involved in music. When exposed to drum & bass in 1995, Martyn was destined to take things further musically and began to lay the foundations of his career as a DJ, producer and promoter.

In 2005, Martyn’s own productions started surfacing in the drum & bass scene, and in Autumn of 05 the first high profile releases for Martyn made it to the shops on play:music and Marcus Intalex’ Revolve:r imprint. Martyn’s close involvement with Revolve:r/Soul:r crystallized with another 12” and four tracks on Soul:r’s compilation CD Dat:Music released in December 2006. In 2007 Martyn took the world by surprise with“Broken” and “Shadowcasting”, a sizzling dubstep 12” release that came out on Revolve:r. These two tracks were definitely a breakthrough for Martyn into the wider dance music scene, as his music is now being recognized by dj’s in the techno, house and dubstep world. His tracks have been receiving healthy radio- and dj-play by great names such as Gilles Peterson, Mr. Scruff, Ricardo Villalobos, Laurent Garnier, Ame, Mark Pritchard, Skream, Kode9, Flying Lotus, The Bug, Pole, Attias, Luciano, Underground Resistance and Appleblim of Skull Disco. Full of musical ideas, Martyn finished an EP for Revolver – “After Seven // JW on a Good Night // Storm Watch”, a 12” for Appleblim’s Applepips label, and his remix for Leeds-based Hessle Audio (the mighty TRG – “broken heart martyns DCM mix”) instantly turned Martyn into a highly in-demand remixer. Over the course of 2008, he remixed Black Pocket (aka Steve Spacek), Shut Up and Dance, Flying Lotus (on Warp), Shed (on Ostgut Ton) and remix for Ican (planet E, UR). With every release his fusion of techno, dub and dusty old samples receives more exploration.

Teaming up with old friend Erosie (one of Europe’s most talented and well known street artists), Martyn started his own label 3024 in November of 2007. The label is a playground for all the music (in various styles) Martyn is producing and collaborations with other artists. The first release came out in december 2007 : “Velvet” and “Twenty Four”, and was followed up in June 08 by “Natural Selection” and “Vancouver”. Both these releases received an enormous amount of good press and dj/radio play, and were followed by two impressive remixes (on 3024-003) by Flying Lotus and fellow dutchman 2562. With release no. 004 a solo release by 2562, no. 005 is Martyn’s debut album “Great Lengths” – an exploration of his diversity as a musician, set for release on April 20th 2009.

As a DJ, Martyn has played illustrous venues such as Berghain, Robert Johnson, Fabric, Plastic People, Watergate, The End, Cielo, Club Love and festivals like BLOC, Mutek, Iceland Airwaves, Lowlands and Sonar. He is also a regular at Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder events.

2562
(Tectonic, 3024, Philpot, Subsolo, A Made Up Sound)

Imagine a head-on collision between soundsystem shaking sub bass, techno-infused offbeat rhythms, moody chords and unusual sampling tactics… or actually, forget about it. The music of 2562 – aka Dutchman Dave Huismans, the number representing his former zipcode in The Hague – has surprised dubstep, garage and techno communities and beyond right because it escapes easy categorizing.

From 2007 onwards funky and futuristic uptempo transmissions such as ‘Channel Two’, ‘Kameleon’, ‘Techno Dread’ and ‘Hijack’ (released on DJ Pinch’s Tectonic Recordings and fellow Dutchman Martyn’s label 3024) found their way onto the decks of everyone from Kode9, Appleblim, Mala and Mary Anne Hobbs to veterans such as Francois K, Pole, Shake Shakir and Laurent Garnier. ‘Aerial’, the subsequent debut album, ended up in many 2008 year lists and was followed by a string of remixes. In the meantime sought after experimental techno and house releases for his other project A Made Up Sound appeared on Shed’s Subsolo label from Berlin and Clone Records from Rotterdam, to be followed by a label of his own this September.

His second album ‘Unbalance’, just released in October 2009, sees him taking an entirely fresh direction in bass music. Preceded by the intergalactic machine funk of 12” Love in Outer Space and driven by sample-based, soul-drenched sounds, the album is met by unanimous praise and considered his most fully realized work to date by many.

Known for an energetic dj’ing style, tight mixing skills and wide knowledge of electronic dance music, 2562 is also a proper selector who enjoys making a trip out of a dj-set, going across the board and mixing up brand new dubs from the studio with unexpected house and techno gems. He played a.o. in clubs like Berghain (Berlin), Fabric (London) and 11/Trouw (Amsterdam), at dubstep/bass-strongholds Subloaded, FWD and Sub Dub, and at numerous festivals and underground venues all over the world, from Australia to Japan and from the USA to Russia.

DEADBEAT
(~scape. wagon repair, revolver)

Deadbeat is one Scott Monteith, a long time Montrealer and recent Berlin ex-pat who has been releasing his own special blend of dub laden, minimal electronics since 2000, for labels such as Cynosure, Musique Risquée, Scape, and Spectral to name but a few. His work has been met with consistent critical acclaim from the industry’s leading publications and websites, and drawn regular performance invitations for some of the world’s most respected festivals, including Barcelona’s Sonar, Berlin’s Transmediale, and Montreal’s own MUTEK.

From 1999 to late 2003, Scott worked, assuming various roles, for the Montreal based company Applied Acoustics Systems, makers of a range of critically acclaimed software synthesizers. Having now moved on to pursue his own musical efforts full time, the experience has left him with a passion for the development of new creative interfaces, and a strong grasp of some the most cutting edge technology in the industry. A certified music technology junkie, his knowledge in such matters has been occasionally called upon at various events, most notably the 2007 edition of the Red Bull Music Academy in Melbourne, Australia.

Whether crafting kaleidoscopic house and techno, snap-clap digital dancehall, or impossibly heavy dub, Scott continues to search for his own unique voice between the ones and zeros.

Other projects:
Atlantic Waves – Collaboration with Monolake
Crackhaus – Collaboration with Stephen Beaupré

CHARLY & GALLUS
(Antilounge, BAF Sound System)

Since the mid 90’s charly & gallus have been running the mighty BAF soundsystem giving lots of free party with different styles of underground dance music. After doing numerous events and collaborations, performing with various major players in the dubstep/ grime and electro / drum & bass scene, they decided to focus on their music and started doing live PA’s together.

Charly & Gallus released several tracks on the Antilounge label and in may 2009 they released their album “ Chemical Solutions”.

Their style can be described as grimy & breakable dubstep.

TANYA TAGAQ + MICHAEL RED
(Jericho, Ipecac) (Lighta! Sound)

long time collaborators and friends. after having performed together around the world in a wide variety of contexts, and in vancouver for a few more formal “concerts”, this will be their first full length set in vancouver on a proper sound system within the spectrum of beats, dub and bass.

DAEGA SOUND SYSTEM
(Lighta! Sound, DPR, Blipswitch, Formant, more.. )

Born to composer and choreographer parents, it’s not surprising to hear that brothers Ben and Josh Searles
learned to read music before words. Growing up surrounded by performances, rehearsals, festivals and
symphonies it’s natural that they have continued the tradition. They have done so in their own way, a path
that has become a blend of their classical training and a passion for the sounds of the electronic world.
Djing and promoting now for 10 years, the brothers have taken the next step with the development their
production/performance project DAEGA SOUND SYSTEM.
Beginning their foray into the dubstep genre, Daega Sound has signed to one of London’s finest producers,
Noodles (aka Groove Chronicles) new label project, DPR. Forthcoming and releases on DPR have seen play
from some of the genres biggest players including BBC’s Mary Anne Hobbs. 2009 will see new releases on
DPR vinyl, 12″ releases with quality North American label, Formant Recordings and more forthcoming
releases that are in the works.
Focusing on deep moods and dynamics, their sets are described as “deep and heavy, intricate and
spacious”. Their years of performing as DJ’s in clubs, at festivals and on radio shows is now combined with
their ability to perform their own material as a Live PA act. Now touring and performing both as a Live PA
act or DJ duo, Daega continues to push the deeper end of Dubstep.

Drop The Lime (Trouble and Bass, NYC)
http://www.myspace.com/dropthelime

Everyone comes from somewhere, but some people wear the cities they’re from like badges of honour. Drop the Lime is Luca Venezia, one of those people whose identity is intrinsically connected to his hometown – New York City

And while many have only just heard of the magic of Drop The Lime, Luca has been honing his craft for years. From humble beginnings as a choirboy to a childhood obsession with 50s rock’n’roll, the 25 year old has been experimenting with sound for years via the underground electronic scene of Kid 606’s TigerBeat6 label, Mad Decent and French label Institubes (under his alter ego “Curses!”).

Drop The Lime’s influences range from Brian Eno to rockabilly (he’s well known for his 50s doo wop and soul sets) to Sonic Youth to Wu Tang but things don’t just stop there. He also runs Trouble & Bass, an influential New York club night and label since 2006. The Trouble & Bass crew are the DJs who are defining a new New York sound.

“Having a crew from NYC behind you, pushing the sound you produce, is essential in creating a movement. We’re all producers and DJs so sometimes we’ll collaborate on production — or I’ll have one of them help out with one of my basslines – since they understand my sound better than anyone else”.

Drop the Lime’s new single, Hear Me, drops on Trouble & Bass worldwide in October. The dancefloor filler with its dreamy chorus featuring Luca’s own husky crooning comes with remixes from the new mob of AC Slater, Drums of Death, and Kuduro superstars, Buraka Som Sistema – tree names that will be ruling 2009.
