CHARLIE’S ANGELS FUNDRAISER

Thursday at 9:00pm – April 15 at 3:00am

Republic Nightclub
958 Granville St
Vancouver, BC

A School of Remix family is in need of your support Vancouver.

Matty Cee is putting together the Charlie’s Angels Fundraiser for his daughter as follows:

Friends – I’m writing to you because somewhere down the road I’ve DJ’d for you, booked you, sold you records, worked with you or just raised a glass together – over the past 15 years we’ve crossed paths in the clubs more than once and shared some good times.

Just over a year ago, my daughter Charlie-Anne, at 7 months of age, was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1, a very severe form of Muscular Dystrophy. SMA is a terminal neuromuscular disease that prevents the brain from transmitting signals down the spine telling the rest of the body’s muscles to grow. She has limited movement in her hands and arms, almost no movement in her legs and is unable to hold up her head on her own. 90% of kids with SMA don’t live to see their second birthday. There is no cure. When she was initially diagnosed, the doctors gave us a timeline of 3 months, and told us to take our baby home and love her.

I’m very happy to say Charlie-Anne is one tough little cookie, she is 21 months now and as healthy as she’s ever been. The doctors are always amazed when they see her, and we’ve learned to just take each day is it comes. She is the brightest, happiest kid you will ever meet. Her brain is like that of any “normal” toddler, she wants to learn and absorb the world around her, she loves to sing and play and read stories.

However, life with Charlie-Anne is not without major challenges every day, particularly during cold/flu season. Her respiratory system is extremely weak and she does not have the strength to cough when she is congested. A case of the sniffles for you or I means a month or more in ICU for Charlie-Anne, a heavy cold for us means pneumonia for her. After an illness, she can’t sit up for longer then 2 or 3 minutes before she struggles to swallow her saliva. She needs to use a breathing machine 10-12 hours a day to properly expand her lungs to ensure she is getting enough oxygen.

Which leads me to the reason for this letter: we need to purchase a vehicle that can be adapted with a wheelchair lift so she can remain fully reclined when travelling, and to keep her various medical machines charged and ready at all times, we never know when she will start to choke.

On Thursday, April 14 we’re hosting “Charlie’s Angels” at Republic, a benefit to raise funds towards a mini-van that the Variety Club and other charities can then change to suit her needs.

Admission is by donation (suggested donation $20) and you get 2 free drinks before 11pm.

100 sled dogs slaughter in Whistler, B.C. #reallife

The slaughter of 100 sled dogs by an employee of a tour operator in Whistler, B.C., should be a wake-up call for the need for tougher regulations in the industry, says an operator in Canmore.

“We’re horrified,” said Connie Arsenault, owner of Snowy Owl Dog Sledding Adventure Tours.

“Those dogs didn’t deserve that. I don’t understand why that person would even follow through on instructions like that.”

In April, 2010, an employee was ordered to proceed with an “execution-style” cull of 100 sled dogs that were no longer of use to Whistlerbased Outdoor Adventures “due to a slow winter” season, according to a confidential workers’ compensation review decision obtained by the Vancouver Sun.

Greetings human beings. Is it just my own perception or has the world been flexin it’s muscles over the last few years more than ever?? I dunno it’s like Earth decided to step it up a notch ever since the Tsunami devastated Indonesia in 2004. More than 230,000 people were killed when an earthquake 9.3 struck in the ocean causing the tsunami. That by the way is the 3rd largest ever recorded quake. Shortly after that Hurricane Katrina decided to sink New Orleans. The hurricane was the costliest ever and the 5th deadliest in the United States. It was also the in the top 6 strongest ever. Then came a massive earthquake registered at 7.6 in Kashmir, Pakistan that took 80,000 lives. In 2008 Sichuan, China was rocked by a 8.0 magnitude quake taking 87,000 lives. It was the deadliest to hit China in 32 years, the strongest since 1950 and in the top 20 deadliest of all time. Mynamar in 2008 was the recipient of the Nargis cyclone. It is the deadliest cyclone in the North Indian Ocean Basin, as well as the second deadliest cyclone of all time. Close to 200,000 lost their lives. A little more recent is the 7.0 earthquake that struck Haiti. 3 million people were affected by the quake and estimated 230,000 haitians were lost not to mention the 1 million left homeless. This is the 6th deadliest of all time.

Now we get really really current…
The overwhelming flood in Pakistan is affecting millions of people. Millions. The death toll is at 2000+. This is significantly lower than the catastrophies above…for now. An estimated 20,000,000 people are being affected with over 8 million needing urgent life saving assistance. This is more than the combined 2004 Tsunami, the Kashmir earthquake and the Haiti earthquake COMBINED. The problem here is that there is major damage to roads, bridges, infrastructure and livelihoods so it is slowing relief efforts. The most urgent needs of the population are food, clean drinking water, emergency shelter, medical care and non-food items.

Here’s how you can help:

Large Cell Angioplastic Lymphoma – big words for a simple name….Cancer

Cancer is the dread of all families and unfortunately the Vaydo family is living it- right now.
Our 23 year old brother, Andrew, is fighting this rare cancer and right now he is not winning. We have been putting our faith in
the medical system and the doctors and they are trying their best. We are doing everything we can to help him, which to us,
doesn`t feel like much, but we have decided to plan and hold a fundraiser- to try and help. Obviously he cannot work and yes he
is living at home, but the costs are starting to mount. When the doctors said the cancer is too aggressive, we can`t give you
the life saving stem cell transplant. We said let`s get a second opinion and see a naturopathic oncologist. The naturopath
treatment won`t cure his cancer, but it will help the chemo work more effectively. In the end he is going to need that stem cell
transplant. We are committed to saving our brother and if the BC medical system won`t do it we`re going to take him to Seattle
for it.

That is where we are… waiting. So please if you can help, whether it is helping with our event in some way, donating or even
attending the event- please, do.

Andrew’s Story
Andrew, the older of the two Vaydo boys was diagnosed with Large Cell Angioplastic Lymphoma in December 2009 at the age
of 22. In late summer of 2009 Andrew wasn’t feeling well, he was constantly stiff, sore and feeling tired. When his joints
became so painful that working was difficult Andrew went to his family doctor and was referred to a Rheumatoid Specialist.
With the suspicion that he had arthritis he began treatments, but as the pain continued, becoming worse they began to look for
other answers. In the meantime Andrew had to stop working and captaining his rugby team as the physical demands were more
than his body could take. As the situation evolved and more testing was done doctors changed Andrew’s diagnosis to
Polymitisis, a degenerative muscle disorder, and adjusted his treatments accordingly. But Andrew wasn’t showing improvement,
in fact he was becoming sicker and weaker, masses started to develop on his chest and under his arm. In December biopsies and
further tests were scheduled, but before they could be completed Andrew took a sudden turn for the worse. At the advice of
doctors his family rushed him to Vancouver General Hospital where he was swiftly moved through the emergency room and into
intensive care.
Andrew was diagnosed with cancer, Lymphoma, and it was creating fluid that was building up in his chest cavity, effecting his
lungs and organs. With the fluid being drained Andrew’s condition improved and he was able to start chemotherapy, but fevers
and fears of infection kept him in the hospital. This unfortunate turn of events caused him to miss celebrating Christmas and New
Year’s at home with his family. Eventually Andrew became well enough to go home and to continue treatments as an
outpatient.
The doctors were optimistic, but the Lymphoma did not respond as well as they expected and in the summer they decided that a
stem cell transplant would be the only way to beat the cancer. Even with three siblings there wasn’t a family match, but
thankfully a perfect match donor was found within months. When it came time to prepare for the transplant there were
complications. The Lymphoma was too aggressive and Andrew was no longer a candidate for transplant.
Andrew’s family has sought out naturopathic treatments to work in compliment with traditional treatments, in hope of putting the
Lymphoma into remission. Unfortunately these treatments are not covered by BC Medical Services Plan or extended medical
insurance. This has meant an ongoing cost of an average of $1000 per week for Andrew and his family. After consulting with
another oncologist it has become clear that the only hope is a stem cell transplant. If Andrew is unable to procure this transplant
through the BC Medical Service, he will have to travel to Seattle for treatment. At this point in time we are not sure what the
costs of his future treatments are, but we are still hoping a transplant can occur in BC without travel.
The family is doing their best but costs are running beyond what they are capable of handling, they are asking now for your help
in making sure that Andrew will get the help he needs. They will be hosting a New Year’s Eve party to raise funds, if you are
able to attend or to make a gift of services, money or an item that can be raffled off please contact us.
