Matty Cee is putting together the Charlie’s Angels Fundraiser for his daughter as follows:
Friends – I’m writing to you because somewhere down the road I’ve DJ’d for you, booked you, sold you records, worked with you or just raised a glass together – over the past 15 years we’ve crossed paths in the clubs more than once and shared some good times.
Just over a year ago, my daughter Charlie-Anne, at 7 months of age, was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1, a very severe form of Muscular Dystrophy. SMA is a terminal neuromuscular disease that prevents the brain from transmitting signals down the spine telling the rest of the body’s muscles to grow. She has limited movement in her hands and arms, almost no movement in her legs and is unable to hold up her head on her own. 90% of kids with SMA don’t live to see their second birthday. There is no cure. When she was initially diagnosed, the doctors gave us a timeline of 3 months, and told us to take our baby home and love her.
I’m very happy to say Charlie-Anne is one tough little cookie, she is 21 months now and as healthy as she’s ever been. The doctors are always amazed when they see her, and we’ve learned to just take each day is it comes. She is the brightest, happiest kid you will ever meet. Her brain is like that of any “normal” toddler, she wants to learn and absorb the world around her, she loves to sing and play and read stories.
However, life with Charlie-Anne is not without major challenges every day, particularly during cold/flu season. Her respiratory system is extremely weak and she does not have the strength to cough when she is congested. A case of the sniffles for you or I means a month or more in ICU for Charlie-Anne, a heavy cold for us means pneumonia for her. After an illness, she can’t sit up for longer then 2 or 3 minutes before she struggles to swallow her saliva. She needs to use a breathing machine 10-12 hours a day to properly expand her lungs to ensure she is getting enough oxygen.
Which leads me to the reason for this letter: we need to purchase a vehicle that can be adapted with a wheelchair lift so she can remain fully reclined when travelling, and to keep her various medical machines charged and ready at all times, we never know when she will start to choke.
On Thursday, April 14 we’re hosting “Charlie’s Angels” at Republic, a benefit to raise funds towards a mini-van that the Variety Club and other charities can then change to suit her needs.
Admission is by donation (suggested donation $20) and you get 2 free drinks before 11pm.
